The Residences at Mandarin Oriental, New York
New York City, United States. Mandarin Oriental. Sixty-four residences above the hotel at Columbus Circle — the first the brand ever built.
Mandarin Oriental's branded residence business starts here, in 2004. Sixty-four homes from the sixty-fifth floor up in the north tower at Columbus Circle, above a hotel inaugurated on 1 December 2003. Four years before Armani committed to the Burj Khalifa, three before the Ritz-Carlton at Bal Harbour, nineteen before the same brand's second Manhattan address on Fifth Avenue.
Skidmore, Owings & Merrill with Brennan Beer Gorman; interiors by Ismael Leyva and Hirsch Bedner; the spa by Adam Tihany. Residents take three-in-the-morning room service and signing privileges downstairs — the plain hotel-co-located proposition, executed before the category had a vocabulary for it.
One conflict, and it is the benign kind: the hotel is 202 rooms and 46 suites in one record and 248 guestrooms and suites in another. The same total, counted two ways. Most of this register's conflicts are not that — the Surf Club two hundred miles south publishes six different residence counts.
Who it is not for
Not for a buyer who wants a private building: this is a hotel tower with a shopping centre beneath it and a subway under that. Not for anyone who wants new — the building is twenty years old and its case is the address and the service.
