A history of the private residence
Country by country: who could buy, who built, and the law that decided both.
Each essay is written from the register's own records, and each is also a method. A country cannot be described without a list of its projects, its builders and its rules — and assembling that list exposes every gap in the register's coverage at once. The Mauritius essay began with one record, the wrong one, and ended with three more, five firms and the statute that explains them all.
