Lanai

Lanai, United States. Unbranded. About ninety-eight per cent of a Hawaiian island, in one ownership.

Editorial entry · sources recorded · property confirmation pending

The register holds no other transaction whose subject is a county. Larry Ellison bought roughly ninety-eight per cent of Lanai in 2012 for a reported USD 300 million and has operated it since as a resort island with Four Seasons residences on it.

It is the limit case of the pattern this register has been finding all week. In Mayfair the ground belongs to Grosvenor and the buyer takes a lease. On Kensington Palace Gardens the freeholder is the Crown Estate. On Costa Smeralda the hotels, marina, golf and coastal land belong to one Qatari holding. Here there is no distinction left to draw between the landlord and the place.

The register enters it under §11 on the transaction, not as a residence for sale. What is offered on Lanai is a room or a Four Seasons residence; what changed hands in 2012 was the island.

Who it is not for

Not for a buyer in the ordinary sense: the island is not for sale and the residences on it are a separate product. Not for anyone reading USD 300m as a residential price — it bought land, infrastructure, a town and two resorts.
