Battersea Power Station
Nine Elms, London. Giles Gilbert Scott's power station, with Gehry's first British homes beside it.
A power station turned into a quarter. Giles Gilbert Scott's brick cathedral of 1930s electricity, derelict for decades, was restored by WilkinsonEyre at the centre of a 42-acre, GBP 9 billion regeneration of some 3,400 homes on the Thames's south bank — with Frank Gehry's first British residential buildings, the 308 homes of Prospect Place, and Foster + Partners' Battersea Roof Gardens beside it, and a new Underground station beneath.
One architecture critic states the trade plainly: the cost of restoring the station was carried by high-end building, and the scheme's affordable housing sits not on the main site but across the road at New Mansion Square. The reports named the place without a country; the register holds the whole estate as one landmark development, its phases named in the record.
Who it is not for
Not for a buyer who wants a finished neighbourhood: further phases are still being built.
