Quinta do Lago

Almancil, at the western end of the Ria Formosa. Named for a lake that did not exist until it was dug — and standing on a Roman salting works the golf course partly destroyed.

The name is the first fact and it is not a flattering one. André Jordan bought the pine wood at the start of the 1970s and called it *Quinta do Lago* for a lake he intended to dig. There was no lake. The historic holding on that ground was the *Quinta dos Ramalhos*, also recorded as *dos Descabeçados* — never *do Lago*. The lake inside the estate today is the one he dug. The atlas, which admitted the estate on 2 October as `BA-D-0139`, calls this the clearest case it has met of a place named after its own building site, and admitted the ground for what is under it rather than for what was built on it.

In 1984 the construction of the São Lourenço golf course uncovered — and partly destroyed — an ancient site on the estate's own land. Ana Margarida Arruda and Victor Gonçalves excavated it in 1984–86 and again in 1998 and 2001, each time around golf-course works, and published it in 2017 in *Loulé. Territórios, Memórias, Identidades*. Roman, first to sixth century AD: five rock-cut fish-salting tanks lined with opus signinum, an olive press with its stone weights, domestic quarters running onto the neighbouring Quinta do Ludo. Islamic, tenth to twelfth century: five residential clusters over 1,670 square metres, cells in L and U plans around open courtyards, tapia on stone footings — and a cemetery of 72 graves holding 75 individuals, laid on the right side in oval pits per Islamic rite. Arruda's own wording is that the works *had uncovered and, in part, destroyed* the remains. The salting tanks are still degrading beside the South course.

Three figures the register has published and now qualifies, because the atlas traced every version of each to the founder or to resort copy. The founding year is given as 1970, 1971 or 1972 depending on whether the source means the option, the deed or the launch; this record previously printed *20 December 1971* as though the question were settled. The area is given as 550, 645 or 700 hectares; this record printed 550. And *the most prestigious address in Portugal* is estate-agent idiom with no checkable referent, which the register does not print and never did. The figures stay on the card as a range with their disagreement named, because a number whose every source leads back to one interested party is a claim and not a measurement.

It is the first of Jordan's Algarve projects, and that remains the defensible claim. Vilamoura is routinely named beside it as his work and came to him only in 1995, when he bought the company that owned it — the marina itself dates from 1974 and the atlas holds it on that. Loulé council's own statement on his death in February 2024 sets out the order and makes no claim that either was the first of its kind in Portugal or in Europe.

Nor is it an English project, which is the other thing said about it. It was founded by a Polish-Brazilian developer — born in Poland in 1933, raised in Brazil, arrived in Portugal in 1970 — and sold in 1987 to a consortium of British shareholders headed by Roger Abraham, formerly of Chase Manhattan, with the food entrepreneur David Thompson; Abraham withdrew by 1989 and Thompson led it alone until the Irish businessman Denis O'Brien bought Planal in 1998. British ownership is a decade of a half-century and not the founding — the British presence here is the clientele, which is a fact about buyers and not about authorship.

And it cannot borrow the lagoon it sits at the end of. The Ria Formosa's claim is real and large: protected as a reserve in 1978 and a natural park by decree in December 1987, some 18,400 hectares across five municipalities, roughly half of Portugal's sea salt and half its bivalve output, a station on the East Atlantic flyway. Quinta do Lago occupies its western terminus at Ancão. The atlas's sentence is the one to keep: *sitting at the end of a system is not holding its claim.*

Who it is not for

Not for a buyer who wants the founding story as published: the year, the area and the superlative all trace back to the founder or to resort copy, and the one checkable thing on this ground is a Roman salting works the golf course partly destroyed.

01.10.2026 · Quinta do Lago, and two claims about it that do not survive checking

The register did not hold it. Quinta do Lago is 550 hectares at Almancil bought whole on 20 December 1971 by André Jordan's Planal, opened in phases from 1972 around a William F. Mitchell 27-hole layout, now five courses, bordering the Ria Formosa and reaching its beach by a 500-metre timber bridge. Villas trade between about EUR 4 million and over 20 million. One of the three corners of the Algarve's Golden Triangle, and the register's second Portuguese estate record after Vale do Lobo.

Investment migration — the facts the rule turns on

The register publishes the facts and the rule; it does not say whether any purchase qualifies. Eligibility attaches to a sale, not to a building, and the register is not immigration counsel.
